Art Events in New York for the Lunar New Year, 31 January 2014

Lois Dodd, who was born in 1927,  is finally achieving the kind of recognition that she has long deserved,  In the New York Times, Roberta Smith last year praised a traveling exhibition of her work when it came to the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. Tonight Dodd is giving a lecture at the Prince Street Gallery in conjunction with the space's Sixth Annual Juried Show, which she selected. This is a rare chance to hear a major artist speak about her processes.

New York Art Events, Wednesday, 29 January 2014

Perhaps the most interesting event tonight is not one of the panel discussions (does anyone ever learn anything at these?), but the show wrap-up party at Lyons Weir in Chelsea. This a a fine time to see a group of artists whose work, in a variety of styles, appeal to the young deal Michael Lyons Wier. Particularly notable are those of James Austin Murray, whose development I have followed for over fifteen years, as he has worked in a variety of styles and formats. The all-black sculptural wall pieces he is doing now are particularly strong. But other artists in the show, most of whom will be unfamiliar to even the most knowledgeable,  also leave strong impressions.

New York Art Events for Monday, 13 Janury 2014

Perhaps the most promising art event of the week is the traveling show alighting at the Grey Art Gallery with a reception tonight: "An Opening of the Field: Jess, Robert Duncan and Their Circle." This includes over 180 works by artists, poets, and others active in San Francisco in the 1950s. It was organized by the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, with aid from, among others, the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, which now represents Jess, one of the most important West Coast artists--and one who is only now coming into focus for much of the artworld. The influence of people in the group has been profound, and not just on poetry and painting, but all the way to current developments in film criticism. Pauline Kael was a close friend to Jess and Duncan, who served as father figures to her daughter Gina James (whose own father was the San Francisco filmmaker James Broughton). There is probably no other museum show opening this month in New York that has as much potential to change perspectives on how we view developments in art and in approaches to the history of art.

Art & Performance Events for Tuesday, 7 January 2014

At the Art Students League, one of the most rigorous proponents of geometric abstraction, Pat Lipsky, will be reading passages from her forthcoming memoir, which interweaves an acerbic history of the changes in the artworld of the past 45 years with developments in her personal life. A painter championed by Clement Greenberg, Lipsky was among the artists shown by Andre Emmerich at his 57th Street gallery. After that venue closed, she was with Elizabeth Harris for a number of exhibitions and is now represented by P.P.O.W.  She has been in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions around the world.

Art Events Sunday 5 January 2014

Perhaps the most promising of the openings in New York today is that of Sarah Crowner at Nicelle Beauchene. The work in "The Wave" consists "of sewn paintings surrounding an elevated, glazed terra cotta floor," according to the press release. All the other exhibitions debuting in New York today are in the same area on the Lower East side.

Art Events for 4 January 2014

The Winter 2014 art season is beginning. Perhaps it will bring more interesting work that what was shown during the Fall 2013 season, where the sense of desperation among so many galleries was almost palpable. (How many shows of wan abstraction can you see before you begin to wonder what purpose this kind of art now serves?) These are the openings for the first Saturday in the New Year, with the most notable being the various events on Norfolk Street on the Lower East Side and the return of William King at Mitchell Algus.
