MoMA 11 W 53 exhibition opening today: Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces organized by Thomas J. Lax, Curator, with Lilia Rocio Taboada, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Media and Performance, in collaboration with Linda Goode Bryant NOTE: An archival exhibition that documents the path-breaking gallery as it moved from midtown to Tribeca to Soho. It is accompanied by a catalogue co-published with the Studio Museum that includes a lengthy conversation between founder Linda Goode Bryant and Studio Museum Director Thelma Golden. The material in the show is strong on the uptown activities of JAM, but unfortunately gives way too little attention to the downtown portion of its history, when Kathleen Goncharov, Fred Wilson, Tony Whitfield, and Billy O’Connor put on major shows and performances by Asian Americans and Indigenous Americans, as well as continuing JAM’s strong emphasis on African Americans. One piece, by Daryl Chin, included Carolee Schneemann, Simone Forti, Charlotte Moorman, Elaine Summers, and Alison Knowles as panelists in a discussion led by Michael Kirby.
