NOTE: The Museum of Modern Art is beginning the process of previewing its new building and reopening the entire museum, which has been closed for four months while construction was completed. Multiple press previews, for the majority of art and architecture critics (special viewings have already been granted to major publications), and numerous member parties will be occurring from today until the renovated and expanded spaces open to the public on 21 October. Though there are several new exhibitions and the permanent collection has been rehung, the focus will certainly be on the lay-out of the new galleries and public spaces, which are supposed to correct the manifold deficiencies of the expansion of fifteen years ago. Will it work? Only when the public, not art-world insiders, are allowed in will it be possible to make that determination. Certainly the Jean Nouvel-designed residential tower above the expansion makes an impact on the midtown  skyline, but it is anodyne, not really any more interesting than most of the new super-luxury apartment towers around the world.
