New York Art Events for Monday, 13 Janury 2014

Perhaps the most promising art event of the week is the traveling show alighting at the Grey Art Gallery with a reception tonight: "An Opening of the Field: Jess, Robert Duncan and Their Circle." This includes over 180 works by artists, poets, and others active in San Francisco in the 1950s. It was organized by the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, with aid from, among others, the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, which now represents Jess, one of the most important West Coast artists--and one who is only now coming into focus for much of the artworld. The influence of people in the group has been profound, and not just on poetry and painting, but all the way to current developments in film criticism. Pauline Kael was a close friend to Jess and Duncan, who served as father figures to her daughter Gina James (whose own father was the San Francisco filmmaker James Broughton). There is probably no other museum show opening this month in New York that has as much potential to change perspectives on how we view developments in art and in approaches to the history of art.
